ABU DHABI, November 21, 2025: Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has inaugurated the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi, a new landmark institution in the Saadiyat Cultural District. The museum underscores the United Arab Emirates’ growing prominence in cultural and scientific research, offering an extensive journey through 13.8 billion years of natural history and the story of life on Earth.  Opening to the public on November 22, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi is the largest facility of its kind in the Middle East.

A celebration of Earth’s story and the legendary T. rex at Abu Dhabi’s new museum.

It combines scientific exploration with educational engagement, bringing to life the origins of the universe, the evolution of species, and the geological transformations that have shaped the planet. The museum also houses advanced research laboratories that will facilitate studies in paleontology, earth sciences, biodiversity, and environmental conservation, contributing to the global exchange of scientific knowledge. Among its signature exhibits are two world-first displays that redefine the museum experience. Visitors are greeted in the main atrium by a herd of five enormous sauropod dinosaurs, marking the first time such a group has been displayed together. Another key attraction presents two Tyrannosaurus rex fossils locked in a dramatic prehistoric encounter over a Triceratops, the first time two T. rex skeletons have been exhibited in a single scene.

One of them, known as “Stan,” is a 67-million-year-old specimen recognized as one of the most complete and scientifically valuable T. rex fossils ever discovered. The museum also highlights the natural history of the Arabian Peninsula, tracing the region’s ecological and geological evolution. Exhibits transport visitors back seven million years, when the UAE was home to savannah-like landscapes populated by now-extinct species, including a four-tusked elephant displayed in the galleries. This regional focus reflects the museum’s aim to present global scientific history through an Arabian perspective while showcasing the UAE’s role in advancing research and education.

Unique dinosaur exhibits redefine natural history experiences

H.E. Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, said the museum “offers a different perspective of the story of life on Earth, framed for the first time through an Arabian lens.” He noted that the institution reinforces the UAE’s commitment to culture as a driver of knowledge, understanding, and sustainable progress. Education and research are central to the museum’s mission. In addition to its permanent displays, it will host academic programs, school partnerships, and community science initiatives designed to inspire young people to explore the natural world. Its laboratories will support local and international research collaborations, while interactive exhibits and workshops aim to make science accessible to all visitors.

Saadiyat Island emerges as a world-class cultural destination

The museum integrates sustainability principles throughout its operations and exhibits, reflecting the UAE’s environmental priorities. Its design encourages awareness of climate issues and biodiversity preservation, promoting responsible stewardship of natural resources. Through exhibitions and educational outreach, the institution seeks to cultivate a deeper public understanding of the planet’s history and the importance of conservation. The Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi joins a network of major cultural institutions within the Saadiyat Cultural District, including Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the Zayed National Museum, and the forthcoming Guggenheim Abu Dhabi.

Together, these venues establish Abu Dhabi as a leading destination for cultural dialogue, scientific research, and creative collaboration. Designed by the architectural firm Mecanoo, the 35,000-square-meter museum combines innovative design with scientific storytelling. Its exhibits span from the formation of the universe to the present-day natural environment, offering visitors a comprehensive perspective on Earth’s evolution. With its focus on science, education, and sustainability, the Natural History Museum Abu Dhabi represents a significant addition to the region’s cultural landscape and a key step in advancing global understanding of the natural world. – By Content Syndication Services.
