Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak

MICHIGAN / RankWire.AI / – Michigan health officials have confirmed two deaths connected to the state’s 2026 cyclosporiasis outbreak. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 11,234 cases as of Aug. 3. The state also recorded 193 hospitalizations through July 30. Both patients had serious underlying medical conditions. Officials said cyclosporiasis and dehydration may have affected those conditions, but they released no additional personal information.

Michigan reports first deaths tied to cyclospora outbreak
Health officials track 11,234 Michigan cyclospora cases and 193 hospitalizations.

The two patients developed symptoms before the voluntary iceberg lettuce recall announced on July 17. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recognized the deaths in an Aug. 3 update. It described both as cyclosporiasis-related deaths involving people with underlying health problems. State and federal totals differ because agencies use separate reporting methods. Michigan’s count includes all cases recorded during its investigation, while federal figures generally focus on laboratory-confirmed infections.

Federal authorities continue to investigate a separate nine-state outbreak linked to iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. By July 24, officials had identified 1,947 cases involving people who reported exposure to Taco Bell. At least 98 patients entered hospitals. Reported illness dates ranged from June 22 to July 20. The detailed federal count did not initially include Michigan’s two deaths, which officials confirmed after that update.

Recall removes iceberg lettuce from market

Taylor Farms de Mexico withdrew iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the U.S. market. The action covered several food-service products and selected Marketside lettuce sold through Walmart stores. Affected retail items included iceberg salad and shredded iceberg lettuce with listed use-by dates from July 18 through Aug. 3. Taylor Fresh Foods distributed recalled food-service lettuce to 27 states between June 29 and July 16. Taco Bell stopped using the supplier’s lettuce on July 17.

Michigan has not tied every reported case to the recalled lettuce. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services continues to list lettuce or salad greens as a possible source. Investigators have not named one product, farm or supplier for the entire state outbreak. They also have not linked the two deaths to a specific recalled item. Federal officials say the identified lettuce cluster represents only part of the cyclosporiasis activity under investigation nationwide.

Cyclospora illness can last several weeks

Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that causes an intestinal infection known as cyclosporiasis. People usually contract it after consuming contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include frequent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, appetite loss, weight loss, nausea, bloating and fatigue. Symptoms often appear about one week after exposure, though the timing can vary. Without treatment, the illness may continue for more than a month and can return after briefly improving.

Health authorities advise consumers to discard recalled iceberg lettuce or return it to the place of purchase. People should also wash containers and surfaces that touched the product. Anyone with symptoms should contact a health care provider, especially after recent iceberg lettuce consumption. Older adults and people with underlying conditions may face greater risks from dehydration. Michigan health officials continue to revise case totals as local and state investigators review new reports.
