TOKYO, JAPAN / RankWire.AI / – Typhoon Dujuan lashed eastern Japan on Monday with intense rain and strong winds, triggering emergency landslide warnings and widespread travel disruption. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued its highest landslide alert for Oshima in the Izu Islands shortly after midday. Rainfall totals exceeded 500 millimeters in parts of the island chain. Chiba Prefecture also recorded more than 300 millimeters from Saturday through early Monday afternoon. Officials warned residents about flooding, swollen rivers, landslides and dangerous coastal conditions.

Typhoon Dujuan brings heavy rain, landslide risk and travel disruption across eastern Japan.

At noon, Dujuan was moving north-northeast over waters west of Hachijojima while maintaining a broad storm-force wind zone. Forecasters tracked the system toward the Izu Islands and the Kanto region. The typhoon was expected to pass near Kanto later Monday as it accelerated northeastward. Weather officials warned of violent winds, rough seas and further heavy rain along eastern Pacific coastal areas. They also monitored conditions for linear rain bands, which can produce concentrated downpours over a short period.

The storm also caused damage and closures across several prefectures. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism recorded three landslides in Chiba by 2 p.m. One home was destroyed and another suffered partial damage. Officials also recorded two landslides in Miyazaki, along with one death and one injury. Heavy rain forced closures on 32 sections of six expressways and three national road sections. Flooding and fallen trees also shut 16 prefectural road sections across Ibaraki, Saitama and Chiba.

Heavy rain disrupts flights and public transport

Airlines canceled 384 flights scheduled for Monday by the ministry’s 11 a.m. update. Most affected services involved airports serving the Kanto region. Airport authorities had not reported infrastructure damage that would prevent operations at that point. The storm also affected a major public event in Chiba. Organizers canceled the final day of the Tokyo Game Show because of the typhoon and related transport concerns. Travelers faced changing schedules as operators adjusted services around worsening weather conditions.

Rail and maritime networks also recorded significant interruptions. Eight operators suspended service on 16 conventional railway lines by 1:45 p.m. Another operator planned suspensions affecting 12 additional lines. No Shinkansen suspensions had been reported at that time. Maritime operators halted 36 routes, mainly in Kanto and Kyushu. Highway bus companies suspended 62 routes, largely involving Chiba and Nagano. Local bus operators stopped 26 routes, while several other services continued with partial suspensions.

Flood controls expand as Dujuan moves northeast

Authorities also increased flood-control measures as rain accumulated across river basins near the typhoon’s route. Thirteen dams reached thresholds for pre-release action, while three began advance water releases. Nine dams carried out flood-control operations, with two still operating at noon. Officials had received no reports of river flooding by midday. Emergency teams sent pumping and lighting vehicles to Chiba to support drainage work and overnight response operations. Local governments continued monitoring rivers, slopes and low-lying districts.

Weather officials forecast additional heavy rain across Tokai, Kanto-Koshin, the Izu Islands and Tohoku through Monday. Rain totals through noon Tuesday could reach 250 millimeters across Kanto, Tokai and the Izu Islands. Tohoku could receive up to 150 millimeters during the same period. Authorities urged residents to remain alert for landslides, flooding, rising rivers, strong winds and high waves. Local warnings and evacuation information continued to change as Typhoon Dujuan advanced northeastward across waters near eastern Japan.
